Platinum Engagement Rings

Platinum engagement rings are probably some of the most expensive of their kind, as platinum is about twice the cost of gold. It is considered a lot rarer than gold, so naturally, it is more precious.

About Platinum Engagement Rings.

The material is mined mostly in South Africa and in Russia, while gold – which is more abundant – can be found in more areas such as the United States, Brazil and Australia.

Just like gold, platinum is really durable and hypoallergenic. It is also resistant to tarnishing and rusting. The silvery luster of this metal also compliments the sparkle of diamonds and other gems. This is probably why it is now a favourite when it comes to engagement rings.

Maintenance

As earlier mentioned, platinum is highly durable and scratch resistant so it doesn’t require much maintenance. However, you want to remove your engagement ring before you do heavy work or when you’re working with harsh chemicals. This is to prevent the metal from reacting with any substance that you handle. To clean platinum engagement rings, all you need to do is run a gentle brush soaked in a mild solution of warm water and soap. You can also have your jeweller buff the metal regularly to maintain its lustre. When you’re not wearing it, make sure to store your ring in a fabric-lined container and away from other jewelry that can scratch its surface.

Platinum vs. white gold

White gold is actually considered the next best thing to platinum. In fact, for those who want the beauty of platinum but not the hefty price tag attached to it, they can always opt for new rings in white gold. This way, they can focus on getting high quality diamonds or other gemstones to go with the ring.

At first glance, it’s really difficult to tell the platinum engagement rings from the white gold ones, but there are glaring differences such as higher purity, durability, rarity and weight. If you have money to spare, it’s always a good idea to opt for platinum because it is more resistant to scratches. This means that you can wear it from day to night without ever worrying much about it. You also don’t have to always take it in for refinishing because it doesn’t lose its lustre too easily.

Is it for you?

Gentlemen, if you can afford a platinum ring, then by all means, go for it. Your brides-to-be will be pleased at the thought that they are so special to you that you are willing to spend extra just for them.

There are people, however, who are dissuaded from getting platinum engagement rings because they tend to look like sterling silver. It’s difficult to tell the difference between the two metals at first glance. The real value of the ring may go unnoticed; people may think that you are just wearing sterling silver or white gold and not platinum.

Of course, the whole point of platinum is discreetness. No one has to know that you have a very expensive band around your finger. One word of caution: If you’re going to get a platinum ring, just make sure to take additional insurance because this jewelry is expensive and is considered an investment on its own.
