Platinum Engagement Rings: Explaining the Cost

Platinum engagement rings are considered by most to be the very best in the engagement ring world. And it is true, platinum has many, many benefits with very few drawbacks and little competition to its title as best of the best. To those who are just starting to look for the perfect ring, it may not be entirely clear why that is, and while the most important part of ring shopping is heart, knowledge and a clear understanding of all the options is a close second.

There are several different metal choices for engagement rings. Yellow gold, rose gold, white gold, palladium, and platinum are all very popular and span the width of price ranges, with platinum being at the top. Many people just go on the assumption that because it is the most expensive, it must be the best. That is not always the case, although with platinum it probably is. However, knowing why you are spending so much money makes it a much safer investment.

Platinum is a very precious metal, mined in only a few places around the world. Because you see it in every jewellery store and adorning nearly every married woman’s hand, it may not seem like it is an incredibly rare metal, but it is. That is the primary reason that platinum engagement rings are so much more expensive than the other metals.

The other reason is because there is an incredibly high demand for platinum. This is primarily for two reasons. One is that platinum is beautiful. The cool white beauty is perfect for any skin tone, and brides-to-be love the way it sparkles on their hands. The other is that platinum has many benefits that other metals just cannot match. It is very strong. Platinum is naturally scratch and dent resistant and does not fade or wear away over time. It requires very little upkeep besides the occasional ring cleaning and inspection. And most people do not have the allergic reactions to platinum that they have with many of the other metals.

So while platinum engagement rings might cost more than the other metal choices, there is a very good reason for that. And over the life of your ring, the fact that you will not be spending money on upkeep will make it a very good, very beautiful investment that will last for generations to come.
