Platinum Contemporary Engagement Rings: Is It Worth the Price?

A diamond lasts forever. And when you want the woman you love to be forever yours, you want to give her the shiniest, brightest diamond ring. In addition to the stone, the band should also exhibit superior quality because after all, a modern woman like yours deserves the best of all the contemporary engagement rings out there.

Contemporary engagement rings come in many different metals, including white gold, titanium and platinum. Platinum, however, is the most expensive, with a price tag almost doubling that of white gold.

With sharp, icy colour, platinum certainly gives contemporary engagement rings a polished and sophisticated look. However, is it worth the exorbitant price?

What is platinum?

Platinum is a precious metal with silvery white colour. On the periodic table, it has the chemical symbol Pt and an atomic number of 78. Its high resistance to tarnish, corrosion and heat makes it the perfect choice for jewellery making.

Why are they expensive?

Platinum costs more than both silver and gold. It is one of the priciest and most rare metals. Its immense value comes from several reasons: first, unlike gold used in jewellery, platinum comes in almost the purest form, which is approximately 95%. And unlike white gold, it has a naturally white colour and does not need to be rhodium plated. The metal is extremely dense and feels heavy and worthy. It also lasts a long time, without the worry for corrosion, tarnish or discolouring.

Is it worth the price?

With its silvery white colour and shiny exterior, platinum certainly looks fitting for contemporary engagement rings. However, costing $774 to $2,252 per oz., platinum may break the bank.

So, is it worth the money? It depends on your idea of worth. If you want the woman you love to have one of the most rare, classy contemporary engagement ring that lasts as long as diamonds do, then choosing platinum is worth the money.
