Buy the Engagement Ring that Means the Most, Not the One that Costs the Most

Buying an engagement ring is no easy feat. It is a huge investment, both emotionally and financially. You wonder how much to spend on engagement ring, because you worry that spending too little will offend your future fiancé, and spending too much could get you into trouble. Luckily, the rules about engagement ring spending have changed a lot over the last fifty or sixty years, and buying a ring is now a lot more fun than it used to be, partly because there are a lot more buying options, and partly because there are a lot more design options that affect how much you will spend.

When someone is considering how much to spend on engagement ring, the thought passed down for the last several generations is two-months salary. And back in the mid-1900s, that was okay, but in today’s economy, it is a slightly ridiculous notion. For one thing, the people considering how much to spend on engagement ring are usually in their 20s, and putting aside two-months salary just is not feasible. We are getting married younger these days, and we are also graduating with more student debt and a tougher job market.

Luckily, there are so many options now that were not available before. One major change that will impact how much to spend on engagement ring is buying online. When you are trying to figure out how much to spend on engagement ring, you realize that you can usually afford a lot more online than you can buying from a retail store.

Another thing that will affect how much to spend on engagement ring is the kind of ring you want. Now there are so many different design options and metal choices, all of which can change your price dramatically. You can substitute a diamond for a less expensive gem, but one that might have more meaning, like a birthstone or a favorite colour. There are also many different band choices. If you choose platinum, the cost will be several times higher than if you choose palladium.

When you are trying to decide how much to spend on engagement ring, keep in mind that the thought process from the good old days is not a valid one today. You should choose a ring that you love, that your fiancé loves, and one that will work with your budget. And happily, because of all the choices you have when looking at rings, finding just the right ring will be delightful experience.
